Abstract
The prognostic importance of the immunologic and histologic characteristics of squamcus cell carcinomas in the head and neck have been investigated to identify those features associated with aggressive biologic behavior.
This study was therefore designed to evaluate for prognostic value of the epidermal growth factor receptor using a immunohistochemical assessment.
Twenty eight patient's paraffin embeded specimens were used for immunohistochemical staining. And the results were compaired with TNM staging system, cellular differentiation and treatment results.
In this study overexpression of the EGFR is associated closely with malignant transformation of epidermal cells. However, our results failed to show any statistical significance between the rate of EGFR and clinical features including primary
site,
TNM
staging pathologic grades and survival rate. The overexpression of the EGFR was closely related to only extracapsular spread of metastatic cervical node (p<0.05). Further studies will be required to determine the expression of the EGFR which is
related
to development or prognosis of these squamous cell carcinoma. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:9, 1995)
